In 1967 and 1968, proof sets were not issued because of the absence of circulation 50 cent coins in those years. Finally, in 1969, the Royal Australian Mint resumed the practise started in 1966 of an annual release of Australia's circulating coins struck in proof form.

The 1969 Royal Australian Mint proof coins set was presented in a clear acrylic case, with blue holder and white foam covers used for protection.

Most years since 1966, the Royal Australian Mint has released a proof set containing proof examples of Australia's circulating coinage. Proof coins have a different and more refined manufacturing process than circulation coins. The dies are polished to give a cameo-like/mirror-like or matte finish.
