Fifty cent 1997 - Not intended for circulation
The 1997 Royal Australian Mint proof coins set was presented in a see-both-sides hard plastic case and presented in a special leatherette protective wallet and a colourful presentation box.
Most years since 1966, the Royal Australian Mint has released a proof set containing proof examples of Australia's circulating coinage. Proof coins have a different and more refined manufacturing process than circulation coins. The dies are polished to give a cameo-like/mirror-like or matte finish.
In 1997, the 1 dollar coin original design was replaced with the Sir Charles Kingsford Smith design also used on the 1997 circulating dollar.
A Gumnut Baby proof set was also released. In 1997, the coins were housed, individually encapsulated, in a plush green leatherette, hinged lid presentation case and a colourful presentation box. Also included is an Antique Finish, Sterling Silver (92.5%), Gumnut medallion with a diameter of 45 mm, a thickness of 3 mm and a weight of 43 grams. One side of the medallion is blank to enable a child's name to be engraved. 3,617 Gumnut Baby proof sets were released.
